Republicans Face Challenges in School Board Culture Wars as Democrats Push Back

As Republicans face challenges in school board elections, Democrats are pushing back with a focus on practical education policies. Explore how the culture war over public education is shaping up ahead of the 2024 elections.

Republicans are confronting a critical moment in the battle over public education, with their strategy on culture war issues coming under pressure. Moms for Liberty, a conservative group that gained prominence by supporting restrictions on classroom library books, is seeing its school board candidates lose elections in Florida and swing states. Meanwhile, Republican leaders who opposed critical race theory and LGBTQ+ issues have faced recalls, even in conservative areas of California.

The Shifting Landscape of School Politics

Despite these setbacks, Republicans are not changing course. Former President Donald Trump is expected to emphasize school politics at a Moms for Liberty summit next week, reinforcing the belief that these culture war issues still resonate with the party’s base. However, Democrats are increasingly playing offense on education. At their recent convention in Chicago, liberal speakers criticized conservative candidates as “weird” and condemned so-called book bans.

Democrats Turn Education Into a Winning Issue

The Democrats’ agenda, embodied by vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, is reframing the divisive education issues promoted by conservatives into policies that focus on practical benefits like free school lunches and affordable child care. Walz, a former teacher and Minnesota governor, highlighted his state’s free school meals law during his speech at the Democratic National Convention, contrasting it with other states’ focus on banning books.

“We made sure that every kid in our state gets breakfast and lunch every day,” Walz said. “So while other states were banning books from their schools, we were banishing hunger from ours.”

GOP Strategy Under Scrutiny

Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice insists that the group’s efforts are part of a broader cultural battle over the future of America’s schools. “We’re in the middle of a cultural revolution in America, and one of the biggest battlegrounds is the schools,” she said.

Despite the defeats, Moms for Liberty remains a crucial ally for Trump, who will discuss education policy with the group next Friday. His campaign believes that aligning with Moms for Liberty will help secure support from a key segment of women voters, particularly those focused on parental rights.

Setbacks for Conservative Candidates

However, the group’s influence is being tested. Conservative-leaning school board candidates backed by Moms for Liberty and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis lost several key races this week, including in Florida’s Indian River County, a heavily Republican area. Nikki Fried, chair of the Florida Democratic Party, argued that voters are growing weary of divisive cultural issues.

“Floridians across the state are tired of the divisiveness, they are tired of the culture wars,” Fried said.

Looking Forward: What’s Next for GOP Education Strategy?

The Republican strategy of focusing on social issues in education is being challenged by Democratic successes and shifting voter priorities. While Republicans made gains in school board races in 2022, recent trends suggest that the strategy may need adjustment. Tab Berg, a Republican strategist, advises simplifying the messaging and focusing on broader educational concerns.

“The fight doesn’t stop here,” Justice said, maintaining that the losses do not signal the end of Moms for Liberty’s influence.
