In a candid interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Republican Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado took a firm stand against those within his own party perpetuating falsehoods about the 2020 election. Buck, a member of the House Freedom Caucus aligned with former President Donald Trump, openly criticized Republicans who continue to assert that the election was stolen.

Challenging Election Lies: Buck’s Blunt Warning

During the interview, Buck did not mince words, declaring, “Everybody who thinks that the election was stolen or talks about the election being stolen is lying to America.” He went further to denounce those downplaying the severity of the January 6 Capitol riot, stating, “Everyone who makes the argument that January 6 was an unguided tour of the Capitol is lying to America.”

A Repeat Warning: Buck’s Consistent Stance

This is not the first time Buck has raised concerns within his party. In early November, he announced that he would not seek reelection in 2024, explicitly citing the prevalence of lies within the Republican ranks. In his announcement video, Buck stated, “Too many Republican leaders are lying to America.”

Not Naming Trump, But Urging Truthfulness

While Buck did not explicitly mention former President Trump, who has been a prominent figure in perpetuating election falsehoods, his remarks pointedly called for honesty within the party. Buck urged Republicans to defeat President Joe Biden with a candidate “who’s not lying to the country.”

Judgment on Election Challenges: Buck’s Distinction

When asked about House Speaker Mike Johnson, who led an effort to challenge the 2020 election results through a legal scheme, Buck acknowledged his support for the initiative. However, he drew a crucial distinction, emphasizing that challenging an election through the courts is proper, but attempting to disrupt the legislative function, as seen on January 6, is unacceptable.

Predicting Party Dynamics: No Rebellion Expected

Despite recent changes in Republican leadership, with Johnson taking over as speaker, Buck expressed confidence that Johnson would not face the same internal opposition as his predecessor, Rep. Kevin McCarthy. Buck attributed the challenges to decisions made during McCarthy’s tenure and commended Johnson for navigating the issues effectively.

In Summary: A Call for Truth and Accountability

Rep. Ken Buck’s outspoken condemnation of election lies and misinformation within the Republican Party underscores the deep divisions and challenges facing the GOP. As the party grapples with internal dynamics, Buck’s call for truthfulness and accountability within political discourse remains a critical aspect of navigating the complex landscape.
