LOS ANGELES — President Joe Biden on Monday expressed his condemnation of the violent clashes that occurred between pro-Palestine demonstrators and pro-Israel counterprotesters outside a synagogue in Los Angeles on Sunday. The incident involved physical altercations and has drawn significant attention and condemnation from various leaders.

Biden’s Response to the Incident

President Biden took to social media to voice his disapproval, stating, “Intimidating Jewish congregants is dangerous, unconscionable, antisemitic, and un-American.” He emphasized that while Americans have the right to peaceful protest, blocking access to places of worship and engaging in violence is unacceptable.

Details of the Clashes

The Los Angeles Police Department reported that officers responded to the protest in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood, which involved “several physical altercations” between the two groups. The clashes resulted in two reported batteries, both of which are under investigation. One individual was arrested for possessing a spiked post, cited, and then released. The LAPD has announced plans for additional patrols around places of worship to ensure safety.

Reactions from Local Leaders

California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the targeting of the house of worship, stating, “There is no excuse for targeting a house of worship. Antisemitic hatred has no place in California.” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the incident as “abhorrent” and plans to meet with law enforcement and faith leaders to address the situation.

Funding and Legislative Measures to Combat Antisemitism

In response to rising antisemitic incidents, a budget agreement released by Governor Newsom and state legislative leaders includes substantial funding aimed at combating antisemitism and supporting Jewish communities. This includes $5 million to expand a Holocaust education program and $80 million for a nonprofit security grant program.

Additionally, the California Legislative Jewish Caucus has advanced a package of bills targeting antisemitism, with a particular focus on college campuses, in an effort to curb the increasing incidents of antisemitic behavior and ensure the safety of Jewish students and staff.
