Pope Francis, in a recorded interview with Swiss broadcaster RSI last month, expressed his perspective on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, urging Ukraine to exhibit what he termed the “courage of the white flag” by engaging in negotiations to bring an end to the war. His remarks predated the recent offer by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to host a summit between Ukraine and Russia for peace talks. This offer was extended following Erdogan’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Istanbul.

While Zelenskiy has emphasized his desire for peace, he has maintained that Ukraine will not concede any territory. His peace plan advocates for the withdrawal of Russian forces from all Ukrainian territory and the restoration of national borders. However, the Kremlin has rejected engaging in peace talks based on terms set by Kyiv.

The pope’s use of the term “white flag” in the interview was in response to a question regarding differing opinions on Ukraine’s course of action in the conflict. He stressed the importance of considering the well-being of the people and the courage required for negotiations, facilitated by international powers.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni clarified that the pope’s reference to the “white flag” was in the context of halting hostilities through negotiations. The pope previously dispatched Cardinal Matteo Zuppi as a peace envoy to Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington to engage with leaders in those nations.

Francis underscored the urgency of negotiating to prevent further loss of life, suggesting Turkey as a potential mediator. He emphasized the necessity of negotiation, stating that it should not be viewed as a surrender. Furthermore, the pope expressed his willingness to mediate if called upon.

In addressing the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Francis reiterated the importance of negotiation, emphasizing that it does not signify surrender.

Zelenskiy’s recent statements highlighted the significant loss of life since the onset of the Russian invasion, with thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians reportedly killed.
