Pope Francis Released from Hospital After 38 Days

Pope Francis made his first public appearance on Sunday after being discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he was treated for double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff had been in critical condition on multiple occasions and will now require at least two months of rest at the Vatican.

Doctors Warn of Serious Health Risks

One of Pope Francis’ attending doctors, Sergio Alfieri, revealed that the pontiff experienced two life-threatening episodes during his hospitalization. Due to intensive high-flow oxygen therapy, he will need to relearn how to speak properly. While he has overcome the immediate danger, medical professionals emphasize the need for continued supervision.

Vatican Debates Pope’s Resignation

Amid his illness, internal discussions took place within the Vatican regarding whether Pope Francis should step down to focus on his recovery. Some advisors believed resigning would allow him to regain his health, while others feared that his weakened condition could lead to increased influence from the Curia, the Vatican bureaucracy. Ultimately, Francis decided to remain in his role.

Pope Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza

In his first public statement after being discharged, Pope Francis addressed the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza. He called for an immediate halt to the violence and urged conflicting parties to resume dialogue, release hostages, and work toward a final ceasefire.

Future Health Concerns and Vatican Oversight

The pope is expected to remain confined to his Vatican residence under strict medical supervision, with some sources suggesting he may receive hospice care. His long-term ability to lead the Catholic Church remains uncertain as he navigates ongoing health challenges.
