Pakistani Airstrikes in Afghanistan Kill 46 Amid Rising Tensions

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated following Pakistani airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan that reportedly killed 46 people, mostly women and children. The strikes, aimed at targeting insurgents, have drawn sharp criticism from the Taliban government and raised fears of retaliation.

Airstrikes in Eastern Afghanistan

Pakistan launched airstrikes on four locations in Paktika province’s Barmal district on Tuesday, reportedly killing 46 people, including women and children, according to Taliban officials. The strikes targeted what Pakistani security officials described as insurgent training facilities.

Claims from Both Sides

Hamdullah Fitrat, the deputy spokesman for the Afghan government, stated that the victims were refugees. The Pakistani Taliban (TTP), closely allied with the Afghan Taliban, claimed 50 deaths, including 27 women and children, labeling the victims as “unarmed refugees.” The TTP also released photos allegedly showing children killed in the strikes.

Local residents reported 13 deaths initially, with fears of a higher toll. Wounded individuals were transported to a nearby hospital. Pakistan has not officially commented on the strikes.

Pakistani Response and Domestic Security

The Pakistani military reported killing 13 insurgents in a separate operation in South Waziristan on Wednesday. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi commended Pakistan’s security forces for countering terrorist threats but did not reference the airstrikes inside Afghanistan.

Pakistan continues to accuse the Taliban of failing to curb militant activity across the border, a claim denied by the Afghan Taliban.

Taliban Condemnation and Retaliation Threats

The Taliban Defense Ministry strongly condemned the strikes, promising retaliation. Security analysts warn of possible TTP attacks in Pakistan in response.

The region has witnessed heightened militant activity, with Pakistan recently suffering a checkpoint attack in the northwest that left 16 soldiers dead.

Historical Context and Rising Tensions

North and South Waziristan, previously strongholds of the TTP, remain volatile. Pakistan’s recent intelligence-based operations inside Afghanistan have further strained relations, highlighting a fragile and escalating conflict.
