North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, aged 40, is reportedly grappling with obesity-related health issues, including high blood pressure and diabetes. According to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), Kim has regained weight, reaching approximately 140 kilograms (308 pounds). Kim’s health is of significant concern given his family’s history of heart problems, with both his father and grandfather having succumbed to heart-related issues.
The NIS briefed South Korean lawmakers, revealing that Kim’s lifestyle factors—such as heavy drinking, smoking, and stress—may contribute to his deteriorating health. These insights were reportedly gathered from intelligence indicating that North Korean officials are seeking new medications abroad to manage Kim’s conditions.
Speculation surrounding Kim Jong Un’s health has increased interest in his potential successor, as he has not formally named one. While his preteen daughter, Kim Ju Ae, has been publicly seen at various events alongside her father, her official status as heir remains unconfirmed. The NIS reported that around 60% of her public appearances involve military events, suggesting a potential grooming for future leadership. However, the possibility of her being replaced by another sibling cannot be ruled out.
Kim’s health and the issue of succession are critical given North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, which pose a significant concern for global security, particularly for the United States and its allies. The opaque nature of the North Korean regime adds to the uncertainty, making external assessments challenging.
