In a pivotal endorsement, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has thrown his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. This endorsement adds to the growing support for Harris as she prepares for the 2024 presidential election.

Adams Endorses Harris on Morning Joe

During an appearance on Morning Joe, Mayor Eric Adams expressed his strong support for Harris, stating, “I think she is the voice that the party needs right now.” Adams, a former police captain, emphasized Harris’ background as a California prosecutor and her potential to regain the trust of Black and Latino voters.

“We’re hemorrhaging African Americans. We’re hemorrhaging Hispanic voters. We’re hemorrhaging those working-class people who don’t realize the Democratic Party has a good product,” said Adams, highlighting the need for a candidate who can connect with diverse communities.

A Change in Stance

Adams’ endorsement marks a significant shift from his position on Sunday night, when he declined to back Harris following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign and endorse Harris. Despite previously expressing support for Biden, Adams had clashed with the White House over its handling of the migrant crisis, an issue that Harris oversaw.

The tension between Adams and the Biden administration had grown so intense that Biden’s campaign eventually dropped Adams as a top surrogate. However, after discussions with Democratic leaders, including Jay Jacobs, head of the New York State Democratic Party, Adams decided to support Harris.

Adams’ Commitment to Harris’ Campaign

Speaking to a reporter on Monday, Adams explained his decision, saying he was convinced by party leaders and is now ready to assist Harris’ campaign in any way possible. “I’m a soldier,” Adams said. “I do whatever the general tells me to do.”

Adams’ endorsement is a significant boost for Harris, as she continues to garner support from influential figures within the Democratic Party. His backing underscores Harris’ appeal and potential to unify the party and attract key voter demographics.

Harris’ Momentum Builds

Harris’ campaign has seen a rapid increase in endorsements from high-profile Democrats since she announced her candidacy. Senior House Democrats Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar also recently endorsed Harris, further solidifying her status as a leading candidate.

As the Democratic primary unfolds, endorsements like Adams’ will be crucial for Harris as she aims to build momentum and secure the nomination. Her campaign will focus on uniting the party, addressing critical issues, and building on the achievements of the Biden administration.
