Sean Spiller: A Union Leader’s Bid for Governor

Sean Spiller, president of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), has officially entered the Democratic primary for governor. Spiller, who has a background as a teacher and former mayor of Montclair, is seeking to leverage the NJEA’s influence and financial resources to secure the governor’s office. The NJEA, the largest public-sector union in New Jersey with 200,000 members, is expected to spend $35 million to support Spiller’s campaign.

A Teacher’s Perspective on Affordability

Spiller’s campaign is centered on making New Jersey more affordable for working-class families. Drawing on his experiences as both a teacher and mayor, he advocates for policies that reduce the financial burdens on residents. He highlights the importance of affordable early childhood education, college accessibility, and rent control measures, which he previously implemented in Montclair.

Challenges from Within the Democratic Party

The Democratic primary field is already crowded, with three declared candidates and two more expected to join after the November elections. Spiller’s opponents include prominent figures like Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, who has been critical of New Jersey’s political structure and the influence of party-backed candidates. Despite these challenges, Spiller remains focused on gaining support across the state through open conversations with voters.

Building on Governor Murphy’s Legacy

Spiller expresses admiration for Governor Phil Murphy’s approach to investing in people, particularly in education and raising the minimum wage. However, Spiller believes that his experience as a teacher offers a unique perspective that can further enhance state policies, particularly in early childhood education.

Addressing Controversies as Montclair Mayor

Spiller’s tenure as mayor of Montclair was not without controversy. He was accused of creating a toxic work environment and improperly receiving benefits. Spiller maintains that he followed legal advice and has since ensured compliance with all regulations. He emphasizes that, as governor, his decisions will be guided by a commitment to fairness and transparency.

Immigration Policy and the Immigrant Trust Directive

Spiller supports maintaining New Jersey’s Immigrant Trust Directive, which limits local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities. He argues that criminalizing individuals seeking a better life is not the solution and advocates for continued support and resources for immigrant communities in the state.

Why Sean Spiller?

Spiller’s campaign is built on the idea of bringing a lived experience that resonates with most New Jerseyans. He positions himself as a candidate who understands the struggles of working-class families and is committed to addressing the state’s affordability crisis. Spiller believes that his background as a teacher and union leader gives him a unique perspective on the issues facing New Jersey and makes him the right choice for governor.
