In a significant development, a Nevada grand jury has indicted six Republicans, including prominent figures within the Nevada Republican Party, for falsely pledging the state’s electoral votes to Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. The charges include “offering a false instrument for filing” and “uttering a forged instrument,” marking the third state, after Michigan and Georgia, to bring criminal charges against individuals who posed as false electors.

The individuals, referred to as alternate electors, are accused of signing certificates falsely claiming to be the legitimate representatives of Nevada’s voters in the Electoral College. Among those indicted are Michael McDonald, the chair of the Nevada Republican Party, and Jim DeGraffenreid, its national committeeman. Jesse Law, the chair of the Clark County Republican Party, is also facing charges, along with Eileen Rice, Durward James Hindle III, and Shawn Meehan.

The false electors’ actions were part of a broader effort by Donald Trump’s allies in December 2020, where slates of false electors were convened in seven states won by Joe Biden. These individuals claimed to be proper representatives of the states’ voters in an attempt to reverse Trump’s electoral loss to Biden. Some of the electors cited legal advice, suggesting their actions were lawful and aimed at keeping Trump’s options open amid ongoing court challenges.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, a Democrat, announced the grand jury’s indictment, emphasizing the importance of challenging attacks on democracy. The charges reflect the seriousness of the investigation, with Ford expressing confidence in the judicial system to deliver justice.

Notably, Nevada joins Michigan and Georgia in taking legal action against false electors, underscoring the broader implications of attempts to undermine the integrity of the electoral process. The indicted individuals, including key figures in the Nevada Republican Party, now face legal consequences for their role in the false elector scheme.

The Nevada Republican Party did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Shawn Meehan declined to provide a statement. The situation adds another layer to the ongoing discussions surrounding the 2020 election and its aftermath, highlighting the legal repercussions for those involved in efforts to manipulate the electoral outcome.
