Sen. Mitch McConnell issued a stark warning on Thursday, criticizing President Donald Trump’s efforts to negotiate peace with Russia, calling it an “illusory peace” that weakens U.S. alliances and emboldens adversaries.
McConnell’s Strongest Rebuke Yet
Speaking at a U.S.-Ukraine Foundation event, McConnell condemned the administration’s direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, arguing they undermine U.S. credibility and leave Ukraine vulnerable.
“Unless we change course, the outcome we’re headed for today is the one we can least afford: a headline that reads ‘Russia wins, America loses,’” he said.
This is among the most forceful criticisms from a Republican leader since Trump and Vice President JD Vance confronted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last month.
Republican Divide on Ukraine
While some Republicans have warned Trump against concessions to Moscow, others have been more lenient, willing to let negotiations play out.
McConnell, however, remains a staunch supporter of Ukraine aid, despite resistance from the MAGA wing of his party.
His commitment to U.S. support for Ukraine was recognized on Thursday when he received the “Star of Ukraine” award.
McConnell’s Policy Moves
Though he has backed most of Trump’s nominees, McConnell has opposed key national security picks, including:
- Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
He also supported the seven-month government funding bill but cautioned that it could undermine Pentagon strategy.
A Call for Military Strength
While McConnell avoided direct criticism of Trump, he called out his advisers for lacking the necessary commitment to “peace through strength”.
“Too many of those who use it — particularly among the president’s advisers — don’t seem ready to summon the resources and national will it requires,” he said.
As McConnell transitions out of GOP leadership, he remains a vocal advocate for U.S. global power and a critic of isolationist policies.
