Incoming national security adviser Mike Waltz announced plans by the Trump administration to confront drug cartels controlling significant areas of Mexico.
Waltz Highlights Cartel Threats
Appearing on CBS’ Face the Nation, Mike Waltz underscored the dangerous influence of Mexican drug cartels. He described them as paramilitary gangs with billions of dollars at their disposal, using heavy weaponry and armored vehicles to challenge Mexican authorities.
“We cannot have a situation where paramilitary gangs are shooting down aircraft with heavy weapons, controlling 30% of Mexico, and influencing entire border regions,” Waltz declared.
Uncertain Terrorist Designation
When pressed by host Margaret Brennan about whether President-elect Donald Trump plans to designate these cartels as terrorist organizations, Waltz refrained from making a definitive statement.
“I don’t want to get ahead of the announcements,” he responded, maintaining ambiguity over the administration’s exact strategy.
Cartels: A Growing International Threat
Drug cartels have long posed a serious problem in Mexico, benefiting from strong U.S. demand for illicit substances. Their activities have resulted in widespread violence and instability, with cartels directly engaging the Mexican army in intense battles.
“These are not just criminals; they’re paramilitary organizations,” Waltz emphasized. “They’re fighting the Mexican army—not the police—into a standstill.”
Trump’s Campaign Promises
During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump pledged to tackle drug cartels aggressively, promising to use every resource necessary to safeguard American citizens. Waltz reaffirmed this commitment, stating, “President Trump was clear on the campaign trail that we’re going to take them on and defend the American people.”
