Former Vice President Mike Pence made a significant statement on Wednesday during a gathering of state lawmakers at the National Conference of State Legislatures in Indianapolis. His remarks centered on the Georgia election and the events surrounding January 6th, following the recent indictment of former President Donald Trump in relation to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.

Pence asserted that “The Georgia election was not stolen, and I had no right to overturn the election on Jan. 6.” These statements mark his first response since the indictment and underscore his evolving stance on the matter, highlighting his role in certifying the election results.

Pence’s perspective aligns with that of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who shares his position on the election outcome. These statements also set the stage for potential debates within the GOP, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming GOP debate in Milwaukee on August 23rd. Regarding the legal aspects, Pence emphasized the importance of adherence to the law, noting that “No one is above the law, and the president and all those implicated are entitled to the presumption of innocence.”

When asked about his strategy to engage with Trump supporters, Pence expressed hope for Trump’s participation in the upcoming debate. He referenced his past debate experience with a light-hearted remark. Pence’s decision to stand firm against certain claims by Trump has generated both support and criticism, especially among segments of the Republican base.

Despite Pence’s efforts to clarify his position and address the controversies, his standing in the presidential primary remains modest, polling in single digits. The ongoing discussions about his role in the 2020 election certification and his relationship with Trump continue to shape his political trajectory.
