Michigan’s Attorney General Charges 16 “Fake Electors” in Criminal Probe of Trump’s Election Loss

In a significant development, Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel, has criminally charged 16 individuals known as “fake electors,” alleging their involvement in a fraudulent attempt to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in the state’s 2020 election. The defendants, including several active in Republican politics, face eight charges each, such as conspiracy, election law forgery, and uttering and publishing, as revealed in a video announcement by Nessel.

This move marks a major turning point in Biden’s reelection bid, as his campaign had so far refrained from directly attacking Donald Trump or other GOP presidential hopefuls. However, the decision to pursue charges against the “fake electors” suggests that the campaign views Trump as the most credible threat in the GOP primary field.

The alleged scheme unfolded on December 14, 2020, weeks after Biden secured a victory of over 154,000 votes in Michigan. The accused individuals secretly convened at the state GOP headquarters’ basement and signed documents falsely claiming to be the legally qualified electors for the state in the Electoral College, according to Nessel. However, they were not legally elected and qualified electors, and each of the defendants knew it.

After the clandestine meeting, some of the fraudulent electors attempted to enter the state Capitol to deliver their fabricated electoral votes to the Senate floor. However, they were turned away. Subsequently, the bogus electoral documents were sent to the U.S. Senate and the National Archives, with the intent of having then-Vice President Mike Pence use the false electoral slate to overturn the election results.

The defendants charged in the case include: Kathy Berden, Rose Rook, Mayra Rodriguez, William “Hank” Choate, Meshawn Maddock, Mari-Ann Henry, John Haggard, Clifford Frost, Kent Vanderwood, Stanley Grot, Marian Sheridan, Timothy King, James Renner, Michel Lundgren, Amy Facchinello, and Ken Thompson. If convicted, they could face up to 14 years in prison. Notably, Nessel has not ruled out the possibility of charging additional defendants.

The criminal charges against the “fake electors” represent the first time such members of Electoral College slates have faced legal action for their involvement in an attempt to undermine a presidential election. The announcement came just hours after Donald Trump revealed that the Department of Justice’s special counsel, Jack Smith, designated him as a target in a federal criminal probe focused on attempts to undo Trump’s 2020 election loss.

The investigation into the “fake electors” underscores the seriousness with which authorities are addressing attempts to manipulate election outcomes and the potential legal consequences for those involved.

The case also highlights the significance of Michigan’s 16 Electoral College votes in securing Biden’s victory against Trump. While Trump’s allies in Michigan and other states sought to challenge the election results through alternate electors’ slates, Vice President Pence ultimately rejected their claims, certifying Biden’s victory in the Electoral College.

As the criminal investigation continues, the nation will closely follow the legal proceedings and consider the potential implications for future elections. Addressing attempts to subvert the democratic process through fraudulent means is essential for upholding the integrity of elections and maintaining public trust in the electoral system.

Michigan’s 2020 election was subject to scrutiny, with several states under investigation for potential election fraud. The case against the “fake electors” in Michigan serves as a reminder that such actions will be met with legal scrutiny and potential criminal charges.

The nation will be closely watching the legal developments in this case, as it could have far-reaching implications for future election integrity and accountability. As the investigation unfolds, more details will emerge, and it will be essential to stay updated on this important and evolving story.
