Michelle Obama Criticizes Donald Trump at Democratic National Convention
Former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a forceful critique of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday. Her remarks focused on Trump’s character and his history of racist attacks, particularly those targeting her and her husband, former President Barack Obama.
Criticism of Trump’s Character and Racism
Michelle Obama condemned Trump’s worldview, describing it as “limited and narrow,” and argued that it led him to feel threatened by the success of two Black individuals who had achieved significant accomplishments through hard work and education. She highlighted Trump’s past attacks on her husband’s citizenship and noted the underlying bigotry and xenophobia that fueled those claims. In her 2018 memoir, Becoming, Obama had previously expressed concerns about how these attacks endangered her family’s safety.
Response to Trump’s Remarks on “Black Jobs”
In a pointed rebuke, Michelle Obama mocked Trump’s campaign rhetoric about “Black jobs,” a term he used to suggest that jobs for Black Americans were being taken by migrants. She quipped, “Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs?'” This remark drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Support for Kamala Harris and Critique of Trump
Michelle Obama also voiced strong support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who was set to formally accept the party’s nomination for president at the convention. If elected, Harris would become the first Black and South Asian president of the United States. Obama contrasted Harris’s background with Trump’s, emphasizing that most Americans do not grow up with the advantages of generational wealth. She highlighted the challenges faced by those without such privileges, stating that they do not have the luxury of repeated chances or the ability to manipulate the system to their advantage.
Condemnation of Racist and Sexist Attacks on Harris
Obama also addressed the racist and sexist attacks that have been directed at Harris by Trump, some Republicans in Congress, and right-wing activists. She accused Trump of relying on “ugly, misogynistic, racist lies” instead of offering real solutions to improve people’s lives. These attacks, she argued, are part of Trump’s ongoing strategy to divide and distract voters.
Echoes of the 2008 Campaign and a Call to Action
Drawing parallels to her husband’s 2008 presidential campaign, Michelle Obama remarked on the hopeful energy she sensed at the convention and across the country in support of Harris. She invoked the “Hope” slogan that had been central to Barack Obama’s campaign, declaring that “Hope is making a comeback.”
However, she also acknowledged that the race between Harris and Trump would be close and urged Democrats to remain vigilant, organized, and mobilized. She emphasized that despite the positive energy, the campaign would be an “uphill battle” and warned against complacency.
