Maryland Governor Wes Moore has cautioned Senator Joe Manchin against tarnishing his legacy by considering a third-party presidential run in 2024. Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Moore acknowledged Manchin’s distinguished service but urged him not to involve himself in what he deemed a “foolish” pursuit.
Last week, Manchin announced he would not seek another Senate term and hinted at a potential presidential bid. President Joe Biden’s team had encouraged Manchin to run for the Senate again in the traditionally conservative state of West Virginia.
Governor Moore, a Democrat, criticized the group No Labels, which has been seeking a centrist candidate, stating that they lack a clear plan, path, or policy platform. He emphasized that they don’t even have a candidate, dismissing them as an inadequate solution for disillusioned voters.
Regardless of potential third-party candidates like Manchin, Cornel West, Jill Stein, or Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Moore expressed confidence that President Biden’s achievements would resonate with voters, making a strong case for his reelection. Moore highlighted Biden’s commitment to working on tangible improvements within the existing systems, praising the president for delivering real and productive results for the country.
Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a Republican and national co-chair of No Labels, commended Manchin for his work with the group but expressed uncertainty about Manchin’s actual presidential aspirations. Hogan acknowledged Manchin’s inclination to stay in the center of attention but questioned whether the recent hype around a potential presidential campaign would materialize.
