Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney has intensified her battle against Donald Trump, not only by endorsing Kamala Harris but also pledging to campaign in battleground states this fall. Cheney’s declaration marks a significant escalation in her efforts to ensure Trump doesn’t return to power.
Dick Cheney’s Endorsement of Harris
At the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Cheney revealed that her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, would also be voting for Harris. The announcement was met with cheers from the audience, further highlighting the symbolic weight of this endorsement. Later, Dick Cheney confirmed the decision in a statement, saying Trump “can never be trusted with power again.” He added, “We each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution.”
Trump quickly responded on Truth Social, dismissing Dick Cheney’s endorsement by calling him an “irrelevant RINO” (Republican In Name Only).
Cheney’s Campaigning Efforts
Liz Cheney has promised to take her fight against Trump directly to the voters, especially in battleground states. Despite being a long-time critic of Trump, Cheney’s endorsements and recent speeches signal a new level of urgency. She emphasized the importance of defeating Trump and other candidates who have embraced election denialism, stating that voters must rally around serious leaders who value the Constitution.
Cheney also announced her endorsement of Rep. Colin Allred in his Senate race against Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas. Her involvement in this race is part of her broader mission to challenge candidates aligned with Trump’s ideology.
A Fierce Critic of Trump
Cheney has been a prominent anti-Trump voice since the January 6th attack on the Capitol, where she served as the vice chair of the select committee investigating the riot. Her criticism of Trump led to her ousting from Congress in a Trump-backed primary defeat. However, Cheney remains undeterred, stating that those who believe in democracy and the Constitution must come together in the 2024 election.
