Keir Starmer, newly elected UK Prime Minister, has outlined six key priorities as he begins his term. Following a landslide victory on July 4, Starmer’s focus includes:

  1. Immigration Policy: Starmer plans to scrap the controversial deportation policy to Rwanda. Instead, a new Border Security Bill will be introduced, emphasizing counterterrorism and combating organized crime and people-smuggling.
  2. NHS Strikes: Addressing the NHS crisis is a top concern. Health Secretary Wes Streeting aims to resolve ongoing pay disputes with junior doctors, while increasing appointments and operations to reduce waiting lists.
  3. Prisons Crisis: With prisons near capacity, Labour will maintain the early-release scheme and consider planning reforms to expedite new prison construction. Starmer also plans a review of sentencing practices to reduce reoffending rates.
  4. Planning Reform: An overhaul of the planning system aims to expedite infrastructure projects and housing development, including building 1.5 million new homes. Labour intends to redefine “nationally significant” projects to prevent local authorities from blocking development.
  5. Relations with Nations and Regions: Starmer is touring devolved nations to reset relations and establish better cooperation with first ministers. Key issues include the NHS in Wales, the Irish Sea border, and regional devolution.
  6. EU Relations: Starmer seeks to improve relations with the EU, aiming for greater economic cooperation and a veterinary agreement to smooth trade and reduce border friction.

Starmer’s approach signals significant changes in policy direction and governance, reflecting the public’s demand for reform.
