Harris’ Vice Presidential Selection Process Nears Conclusion

Final Candidates for Vice Presidential Running Mate

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has reportedly narrowed her search for a vice presidential running mate to two finalists: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. This information comes from three sources familiar with the matter.

Announcement Timing and Initial Appearance

Vice President Harris is expected to announce her selection by Tuesday, ahead of a planned public appearance with her running mate that evening at Temple University in Philadelphia. The decision appears to be in its final stages, although it is unclear if a final choice has been made. This rally will commence a five-day, seven-city tour across battleground states pivotal for the upcoming November 5 election.

Significance of the Decision

The selection of a vice presidential candidate is a critical decision in Harris’ campaign to challenge Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his vice presidential pick, U.S. Senator JD Vance. Trump and Vance are also scheduled to campaign in South Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Candidate Profiles

Josh Shapiro:

  • Age: 51
  • Current Role: Governor of Pennsylvania
  • Background: Former state attorney general
  • Significance: Potential first Jewish vice president
  • Appeal: Strong approval ratings in Pennsylvania, a key state with 19 electoral votes. His support for Israel could attract moderate voters but may alienate progressives.

Tim Walz:

  • Age: 60
  • Current Role: Governor of Minnesota
  • Background: Former U.S. Army National Guard member and teacher, former member of Congress
  • Appeal: Proven ability to attract rural, white voters, and champion of progressive policies like free school meals and expanded paid worker leave. His recent prominence as an advocate for Harris enhances his candidacy.

Other Contenders

Previously, speculation included six other candidates:

  • U.S. Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona
  • Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg
  • Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear
  • Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker

These individuals were also considered for their ability to win over rural, white, or independent voters.

Decision Process and Consultation

Sources indicate that candidates will be informed of Harris’ decision by Monday night or Tuesday morning. The campaign plans to announce the selection via social media, showcasing Harris and her running mate together. Harris has been consulting with her vetting team, including former Attorney General Eric Holder, who led the scrutiny of candidates’ finances and backgrounds through his law firm, Covington & Burling LLP. Harris is also discussing the decision with her husband, Doug Emhoff, and a small circle of advisers.

Campaign Tour and Strategy

The upcoming tour will cover seven cities in five days:

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Eau Claire, Wisconsin
  • Detroit, Michigan
  • Durham, North Carolina
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Las Vegas, Nevada

Rallies will be held at various locations, including college campuses, historically Black universities, union halls, and restaurants. The campaign also recently launched “Republicans for Harris,” aiming to persuade Republican voters to support the Democratic candidate, with kickoff events in Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

Union Endorsement

On Monday, Harris received an endorsement from the hospitality workers union, highlighting her longstanding support for union workers.
