Vice President Kamala Harris is focusing on immigration as a central theme in her 2024 presidential campaign, highlighting her past work on border security and criticizing former President Donald Trump’s policies. Harris aims to challenge the Republican narrative, emphasizing her administration’s efforts to craft a bipartisan border deal that Trump allegedly blocked. This strategic move marks a departure from traditional Democratic approaches, positioning Harris to appeal to voters concerned about immigration.

At a recent rally in Atlanta, Harris touted her record as California’s attorney general and vice president, prosecuting transnational gangs and human traffickers. Her campaign released a new ad asserting, “Kamala Harris is fighting to fix our broken immigration system. Donald Trump is trying to stop her.” Harris’ strategy includes digital ads and surrogate events, alongside endorsements from Arizona border-city mayors.

The Biden administration’s recent crackdown on asylum, reducing illegal crossings by 55%, is a cornerstone of Harris’ argument. She plans to reintroduce the bipartisan border security bill that Trump opposed, pledging to “sign it into law” if elected. Harris also addresses Trump’s controversial family separation policy, positioning herself as an advocate for both border security and humane immigration practices.

Harris’ pivot on immigration follows criticisms from Republicans, who have labeled her as the “border czar” and blamed her for the current border situation. Despite these attacks, Harris’ campaign believes that a clear and consistent message on immigration can sway independent and suburban voters.
