Harris Condemns Georgia School Shooting as ‘Senseless Tragedy’

Vice President Kamala Harris called the shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia an “outrageous” and “senseless tragedy” during a campaign event in New Hampshire. Harris emphasized the gravity of gun violence in the U.S. and expressed the frustration of many families sending their children to school, unsure if they will come home alive.

Call to End Gun Violence

While Harris did not propose specific new policy changes, she reiterated her long-standing support for an assault weapons ban and universal background checks. Her emotional remarks underscored her view that this ongoing violence is preventable, urging the country to take steps to stop the gun violence epidemic once and for all.

Details of the Tragedy

The shooting occurred Wednesday morning at Apalachee High School, located about an hour outside of Atlanta. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, at least four people were killed, and nine others were injured. The shooter has been apprehended and is in custody.

White House Response

President Joe Biden also issued a statement following the tragedy, reinforcing his administration’s stance on gun safety. Biden called for Republicans to work with Democrats on common-sense gun safety measures, such as banning assault weapons and requiring universal background checks.

Gun Violence Prevention Office

Harris, who leads the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, highlighted her work in this role and referenced her conversations with students across the country who are growing up with active shooter drills as a normal part of their education. She warned that the current state of gun violence in America “does not have to be this way.”
