Democratic Candidates Grow Impatient as Harris Weighs Decision

The California governor’s race is in a state of uncertainty as former Vice President Kamala Harris remains undecided about her potential candidacy. With major donors and political groups waiting on her move, the rest of the field is growing frustrated with the paralysis her indecision has caused.

Villaraigosa Calls for Immediate Action

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been vocal about his impatience. At a public appearance moderated by POLITICO, he made it clear that Harris should make up her mind soon.

“The time is now,” Villaraigosa declared. “We deserve a real conversation. This cannot be a coronation. Get in now.” His remarks highlight the growing concern among Democratic hopefuls that the longer Harris waits, the harder it becomes for other candidates to gain traction.

Other Candidates Speak Out

Villaraigosa is not the only one feeling the pressure. Former state controller Betty Yee also hinted at her frustration, saying: “Our state cannot wait for the robust conversations we must have regarding our most pressing issues.”

Newly announced candidate Katie Porter took a different approach. While acknowledging Harris’ right to take her time, Porter emphasized her own readiness. “This is a moment that calls for leadership, and I am not waiting,” she stated in a CNN interview.

The Standoff’s Impact on the Race

With Harris holding out on a decision, fundraising has stalled, and many potential supporters are hesitant to commit to any candidate. A Democratic consultant working on the race commented, “Everything is effectively frozen. Donors won’t commit when there’s uncertainty.”

Allies and Opponents Weigh In

While some push Harris to decide, others remain supportive. Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis and state schools superintendent Tony Thurmond have both expressed their respect for Harris’ timeline. Meanwhile, Toni Atkins, the former state legislative leader, issued a subtle critique, saying, “The next governor must want to serve California, not use it as a stepping stone.”

What’s Next for Harris?

Although Harris’ decision could shake up the race, she is unlikely to be swayed by external pressure. A spokesperson for Harris declined to comment, leaving the Democratic hopefuls in limbo. Until she announces her plans, the California governor’s race remains at a standstill.
