Vice President Kamala Harris has condemned the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, labeling it as “heinous, horrible, and cowardly.” In her first public comments on the shooting, Harris emphasized the need for unity against political violence while maintaining a robust discussion about the future of the country.

Condemnation of Political Violence

Speaking at a campaign stop in Michigan, Harris stated, “There must be unity around the idea that while our nation’s history has been scarred by political violence, violence is never acceptable. There can be no equivocation about that.” She underscored the importance of rejecting political violence while embracing a vigorous competition of ideas and policies, which she described as the hallmark of American democracy.

Balancing Condemnation with Campaign Messaging

Harris also raised an essential question for the Biden campaign moving forward: How to decry violence against Trump while arguing his unfitness for the presidency. “Just as we must reject political violence, we must also embrace a robust discussion about what is at stake in this election,” she added.

The Biden-Harris campaign has consistently highlighted Trump as a threat to democracy, citing his record, criminal indictments, and the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity decision. The assassination attempt at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which resulted in one death and two serious injuries, has led to bipartisan denunciation of political violence and calls for calmer rhetoric.

Biden’s Call for Unity

In the aftermath of the assassination attempt, President Joe Biden urged Americans to cool down the political temperature and called for unity in a national address. He expressed regret for previously urging Democrats to place Trump “in a bullseye,” clarifying that he meant it as a call to focus on Trump’s actions rather than promoting violence. “Do you just not say anything because it may incite somebody?” Biden questioned, rejecting the notion that his comments had incited violence against Trump.

Harris Echoes Biden’s Sentiment

Harris reiterated the president’s sentiments, highlighting the delicate balance the campaign needs to strike. “The surest way to reaffirm the strength of our democracy is by engaging in a vigorous and civil exchange of ideas,” she stated.

GOP Response and Trump’s Leadership

At his first campaign event in Milwaukee, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate, blamed the media for suggesting that Trump has engaged in harmful rhetoric. He praised Trump’s response after the shooting, noting that Trump called for national unity and calm. “Donald Trump got shot and he toned down the temperature. That’s what a real leader does,” Vance remarked.
