Former President Donald Trump has been fined $5,000 by a state judge for violating a gag order. The judge overseeing a civil fraud trial imposed the gag order earlier this month.
Gag Order Violation
The violation occurred when a social media post attacking the judge’s law clerk remained on Trump’s campaign website. The judge had previously issued the gag order after Trump used his Truth Social platform to attack the clerk.
Judge’s Warning
Judge Arthur Engoron warned that further violations of the gag order could result in more severe sanctions, including steeper financial penalties or even imprisonment, considering the heightened risk of harm caused by inflammatory statements.
Removal of Violative Post
The offending post was removed only after the court sent an email requesting its removal. The violation has consequences not only in the civil fraud case but also in a federal criminal case in Washington, D.C.
