Stein Reflects on North Carolina Campaign Success

North Carolina Governor-elect Josh Stein discussed his decisive victory and Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss in the state on ABC’s This Week. While Harris lost North Carolina to President-elect Donald Trump by three points, Stein achieved a historic win, securing nearly a 15-point margin—the largest for a Democratic governor candidate in 44 years. Stein attributed his success to a “positive and forward-looking” campaign that resonated with voters across the state.

2. Harris’ Short Campaign Cited as Key Factor

Stein highlighted the brevity of Harris’ campaign, which began in July, as a significant factor in her loss. He noted that the national political mood and Trump’s success in swing states made the election challenging for Democrats. Despite this, Stein underscored the strength of Democratic wins in key North Carolina state positions, including attorney general, secretary of state, and lieutenant governor.

3. Concerns About Trump Administration Picks

When asked about his concerns regarding the incoming Trump administration, Stein criticized Trump’s nomination of Kash Patel to lead the FBI, expressing doubts about Patel’s commitment to the rule of law. Stein emphasized the need for federal leadership that upholds democratic principles.

4. Democratic Strategy and Republican Challenges

Harris’ campaign in North Carolina focused on suburban voters and moderate Republicans, targeting controversial policies associated with her Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, and his ties to Trump. However, Stein avoided commenting on Robinson’s scandals, choosing instead to focus on his vision for the state’s future.

5. A Brighter Future for North Carolina

Stein expressed pride in his campaign’s focus on inclusivity and progress. He emphasized that his tenure as North Carolina’s attorney general proved his leadership abilities and dedication to serving the state’s diverse population. His optimistic approach contrasted with the challenges Democrats faced nationally, positioning North Carolina as a bright spot for the party.
