Republican Rep. John Curtis, a moderate conservative who has occasionally bucked former President Donald Trump, won a crowded GOP primary on Tuesday for Mitt Romney’s Utah Senate seat. Curtis secured a win for the mainstream GOP in a devout Mormon state that has long proved skeptical of Trumpian politics.

Curtis Prevails in Crowded Primary

Curtis, who first entered Congress in 2017, defeated Trent Staggs, a MAGA candidate with Trump’s endorsement, showcasing a victory for more traditional Republican values. Curtis garnered 50.1% of the vote, while Staggs received 30.9%, and other candidates split the remaining 19.0%.

Moderate Conservative with Independent Streak

Curtis is known for his moderate conservatism and willingness to criticize Trump. Unlike Romney, who voted guilty in both Senate trials for Trump’s impeachments, Curtis voted against impeachment but called for Trump’s censure after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Curtis’ campaign was bolstered by significant financial support from super PACs and climate activist Jay Faison.

Romney’s Neutral Stance and Praise

Mitt Romney, who decided not to seek reelection due to his discomfort with Trump’s influence in the GOP, stayed neutral during the primary but praised Curtis after his victory. “John Curtis is a man of honor and integrity who cares deeply about our fellow citizens and the future of our country,” Romney posted on X.

Staggs’ Struggles and Trump’s Influence

Trent Staggs, Riverton mayor and Trump-endorsed candidate, struggled with fundraising and did not run any ads, unlike Curtis who spent $1.5 million on ads. Despite winning the GOP convention, Staggs could not sustain his campaign against Curtis’ well-funded efforts.

Looking Ahead to the General Election

Curtis now faces Caroline Gleich, a professional ski mountaineer and climate activist, in the upcoming fall election. Given Utah’s conservative leanings, Curtis is expected to be the heavy favorite.
