Italian Labor Minister Marina Calderone has announced new measures to combat migrant worker exploitation after the death of Satnam Singh, an Indian farm worker. Singh was allegedly abandoned on a rural road near Rome by his employer following a work accident that severed his arm. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from politicians and trade unions.

In response, Calderone pledged to increase the number of labor inspectors and double the number of inspections over the next year. The goal is to curb the Mafia-led exploitation of irregular migrants, known as caporalato, prevalent in Italy’s agricultural sector.

Key Points:

  1. Increased Inspections: Italy will double labor inspections to address migrant worker exploitation.
  2. Tragic Incident: The death of Satnam Singh highlights severe issues in the treatment of migrant workers.
  3. Government Commitment: Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida emphasized the government’s dedication to fighting labor exploitation.
  4. Data-Driven Approach: Calderone mentioned using intelligence and data cross-referencing to monitor and intervene in exploitation practices.

The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, is taking a strong stance against labor exploitation, aiming to protect the rights and welfare of migrant workers.
