Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has advocated for the creation of a unified European army to enhance peacekeeping efforts and conflict prevention, according to an interview with La Stampa. Tajani, who leads the Forza Italia party, emphasized the importance of closer European defense cooperation, considering it a crucial element for an effective European foreign policy. He argued that in a world with influential players like the United States, China, India, and Russia, a European military is essential to protect the citizens of EU nations. Tajani highlighted the existing security framework within the European Union as a means of safeguarding its member states.

The push for increased European defense collaboration has gained prominence in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago. While efforts have primarily focused on NATO expansion, Tajani stressed the need for a European military to bolster the EU’s global role amid geopolitical challenges and crises spanning from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific.

Tajani also proposed streamlining the leadership structure of the 27-nation EU, advocating for a single presidency instead of the current arrangement involving a European Council president and a European Commission president.

The interview reflects Tajani’s vision for a more integrated and assertive European Union on the global stage, asserting that a united military force is imperative for effective peacekeeping and crisis response. The upcoming European Parliament elections in June will serve as an initial gauge of Forza Italia’s popularity under Tajani’s leadership following the passing of former leader Silvio Berlusconi last year.
