In a manifestation of discord between the United States and Israel over the pace of de-escalation in the Gaza conflict, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, engaged in “intensive discussions” during his recent visit to Israel. Amid widespread ground fighting and concerns raised by aid organizations about a looming humanitarian crisis, Biden earlier warned Israel of potential loss of international support due to civilian casualties from indiscriminate airstrikes.

Sullivan, conveying a message to Israel, urged a shift from a broad military campaign to more targeted operations against Hamas leaders. While reports suggested a desired timeline of around three weeks by Biden, Sullivan did not provide a direct answer on the timing, emphasizing ongoing discussions between the U.S. and Israel.

During Sullivan’s visit, Israeli officials maintained a resolute stance, emphasizing their commitment to continue the war until the eradication of Hamas, despite the mounting toll and the potential for a prolonged conflict. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted a pursuit of “absolute victory,” and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant projected a war lasting more than several months.

Despite assertions of Israel’s success and degradation of Hamas, rockets were launched towards Jerusalem, prompting Israel’s Iron Dome air defenses into action. The armed wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, citing retaliation against “Zionist massacres against civilians.”

In what seemed a concession following Sullivan’s visit, Israel announced the opening of the main road link into Gaza for aid shipments, doubling the capacity for deliveries. While Sullivan welcomed this step, concerns lingered about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with health authorities reporting a high death toll and aid agencies urging expedited aid deliveries.

Gaza residents continue to endure intense fighting, with reports of widespread destruction and casualties. The conflict has intensified over the past two weeks, expanding from the northern to the southern parts of the Gaza Strip. Sullivan’s visit and subsequent developments highlight the complex dynamics in the region, as diplomatic discussions persist alongside the grim realities of the ongoing conflict.
