Israel deploys missile boats in Red Sea as Houthis attack from Yemen

The Israeli military has confirmed the deployment of missile boats in the Red Sea as a reinforcement measure. This decision follows the recent claims made by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement regarding missile and drone attacks on Israel, with threats of further attacks to support the Palestinian cause.

Images released by the Israeli military depict Saar-class corvettes patrolling the waters near Eilat port in the Red Sea. Israel perceives this region as a new front, given the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has led to retaliatory actions by Iran-aligned pro-Hamas groups across the region.

The Houthi movement stated that they had initiated three drone and missile attacks on Israel since the beginning of the Hamas-Israel conflict on October 7, pledging more attacks in support of the Palestinian cause. In a recent incident, the Israeli military intercepted what they described as an “aerial threat” over the Red Sea.

Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi expressed that the Houthi attacks were deemed intolerable but refrained from providing specific details on Israel’s potential response. The Houthi movement is part of the Iran-aligned regional alliance, which is openly hostile to both Israel and the United States and includes groups like Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iran-backed militias in Iraq.

It is worth noting that the Houthi-controlled areas, particularly in Yemen, are located more than a thousand miles away from Israel. Up to this point, missiles and drones launched from the Red Sea area toward Israel since October 7 have either been intercepted or have fallen short.

In an incident on October 27, Israel attributed a drone attack, causing explosions in two Egyptian towns on the Red Sea, to the Houthis, suggesting they were intended to target Israel.
