In a recent development, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have reported the seizure of a cargo vessel with Israeli affiliations in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident occurred subsequent to Iran’s declaration of its ability to obstruct the vital shipping passage, coupled with a warning of retaliation following an Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria.
According to Iran’s state-operated IRNA news agency, a helicopter belonging to the Guards intervened, boarding and redirecting the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries into Iranian waters. The vessel’s connection to Israel was cited as the basis for this action. MSC, the operator of the Aries, has acknowledged the seizure and affirmed its collaboration with pertinent authorities to ensure the vessel’s safe return and the welfare of its crew, comprising 25 individuals.
It is noted that MSC leases the Aries from Gortal Shipping, an entity affiliated with Zodiac Maritime, partially owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. While video footage purportedly illustrating the seizure has been disseminated on Iranian news channels, confirmation of the vessel’s identity is attained; however, the precise date of the footage remains unverified.
This occurrence unfolds against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the region since the commencement of Israel’s campaign in Gaza in October. Confrontations involving Israeli forces or its allies, particularly the United States, with factions aligned with Iran have occurred intermittently in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.
Iran’s response, characterized by threats of retaliation, stems from the suspected Israeli airstrikes targeting its consulate in Damascus on April 1, resulting in the fatalities of seven Revolutionary Guards officers, including high-ranking commanders. Notably, U.S. President Joe Biden has issued a cautionary statement, anticipating potential Israeli attacks from Iran and urging restraint.
In reaction to reports of the seizure, Israel’s military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, has warned of repercussions should Iran escalate the situation further. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz has condemned the action as piracy.
Moreover, recent statements by the naval chief of the Revolutionary Guards, Alireza Tangsiri, hint at the prospect of closing the Strait of Hormuz if deemed necessary. This assertion reflects Iran’s apprehension towards Israel’s presence in the United Arab Emirates, established through the “Abraham Accords” brokered by the United States in 2020.
Analysis from experts suggests that the seizure of the MSC Aries could be interpreted as a means for Iran to assert itself without inciting broader conflict, particularly in light of its potential impact on global oil and gas supplies. However, confining such actions to commercial vessels linked to Israel may mitigate the risk of outright hostilities while potentially undermining Iran’s credibility.
Elsewhere, the Yemeni Houthi group, backed by Iran, has disrupted international trade in the Red Sea through attacks on shipping vessels purportedly associated with Israel, in retaliation for Israel’s operations in Gaza. In response, the United States and Britain have conducted strikes against Houthi targets.
The Joint Maritime Information Center, managed by a Western-led naval coalition, has issued advisories urging vessels intending to traverse the Strait of Hormuz to exercise caution and avoid lingering in the area, given its significance as a pivotal energy conduit.
