Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger, who courageously put himself in harm’s way to protect students during a school shooting on January 4th, has tragically passed away, as confirmed by Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory. Marburger sustained critical injuries during the incident, which resulted in the death of an 11-year-old middle school student and injuries to six others, including himself.

The 17-year-old student responsible for the shooting died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. The Iowa Department of Public Safety commended Marburger the day after the incident, stating he “acted selflessly and placed himself in harm’s way in an apparent effort to protect his students.”

Marburger’s death was announced by his family on a GoFundMe page, with his wife, Elizabeth, expressing gratitude for the support and stating, “Dan lost his battle. He fought hard and gave us 10 days that we will treasure forever.” The news prompted an outpouring of condolences on the Perry Facebook page, reflecting the impact of Marburger’s sacrifice on the community.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Marburger’s daughter, Claire, described her father as a “gentle giant” and expressed that it was not surprising he attempted to protect his students. Marburger had been serving as the school’s principal since 1995.

Details about Marburger’s heroic actions to protect others have not been fully disclosed by authorities, but Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks referred to him as a “hero” who intervened with the teenage gunman to ensure the safety of students.

The tragic event unfolded just after 7:30 a.m. on January 4th, marking the first day back after winter break. The assailant, identified as Dylan Butler, carried a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Authorities discovered a “rudimentary” improvised explosive device in Butler’s possessions, which was safely rendered inactive.

Prominent figures, such as Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, expressed condolences and saluted Marburger for his heroic sacrifice. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges surrounding gun violence in schools, prompting renewed discussions about school safety measures and mental health support.
