The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, has sharply criticized fellow Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville from Alabama for his unprecedented attempt to change Pentagon abortion policy by blocking hundreds of military nominations and promotions.

McCaul expressed his frustration on CNN’s “State of the Union” program, stating that Tuberville is effectively “paralyzing the Department of Defense” with his actions. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, particularly regarding military nominations, by describing it as a “national security problem” and called on Tuberville to reconsider his stance.

Tuberville’s actions have resulted in the promotion of less experienced leaders to key positions and have raised concerns within the Pentagon about the readiness of the military. Defense officials have warned that Tuberville is jeopardizing American national security. Senators from both parties, including Republican leader Mitch McConnell, have also criticized Tuberville for his actions.

Despite the mounting pressure, Tuberville has refused to relent, insisting that he will not release the holds on nominations unless Senate Democrats allow a vote on the abortion policy. Democrats argue that holding a vote on every nominee could effectively stall the Senate’s proceedings for months, and they are unwilling to accede to Tuberville’s demands, fearing it could set a precedent for future nominee blockades.

McCaul revealed that the House intends to address the issue of abortion in the military as part of a comprehensive defense spending bill currently advancing through Congress. In the meantime, he underscored the detrimental impact of blocking nominations, asserting that it is “paralyzing our Department of Defense.”
