Poll Results and Key Statistics

Recent polls conducted by The New York Times and Siena College indicate that U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris holds a lead over Republican former President Donald Trump in three critical battleground states: Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. According to the surveys, Harris leads Trump by four percentage points in each of these states, with 50% of likely voters supporting her compared to 46% for Trump. The polls, which were conducted between August 5 and 9, included interviews with 1,973 likely voters. The margin of sampling error is reported as ±4.8 percentage points in Michigan, ±4.2 points in Pennsylvania, and ±4.3 points in Wisconsin.

Impact of Biden’s Withdrawal and Harris’ Nomination

The shift in polling dynamics follows President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign on July 21, after a poor debate performance against Trump in late June. Biden subsequently endorsed Harris for the Democratic nomination for the November 5 election. Harris’ entry into the race has reinvigorated the Democratic campaign, which had been struggling due to concerns over Biden’s chances of defeating Trump and doubts about his capacity to continue governing if reelected.

Effect of U.S. Support for Israel on Voter Sentiment

The Biden administration’s support for Israel during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties and a humanitarian crisis, has sparked protests and opposition, particularly in Michigan. Liberal, Muslim-American, and Arab-American communities in the state, along with other groups, had shown growing discontent with Biden’s policies, with about 200,000 voters in these three states remaining “uncommitted” during the Democratic primaries, largely due to concerns over Gaza. Harris, while not differing significantly in policy from Biden, has made notable public statements on Palestinian human rights, which may have contributed to her increased support.

National Polling Trends

Harris’ candidacy has shifted the electoral landscape, with earlier polls showing Trump gaining an advantage over Biden, including in key battleground states. However, Harris’ entry has reversed some of these trends. A separate Ipsos poll, conducted online from August 2 to 7, shows Harris leading Trump nationally by 42% to 37%. This nationwide poll, which surveyed 2,045 U.S. adults, has a margin of error of approximately 3 percentage points.
