Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Praises Vice President Kamala Harris’ National Security Contributions

Vice President Kamala Harris, who is poised to be the Democratic candidate in the upcoming November presidential election, has played a significant role in national security matters, according to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Austin emphasized Harris’ meaningful and helpful contributions during complex decision-making processes within the administration.

President Joe Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the reelection race on Sunday, amid concerns regarding his physical and mental stamina for the anticipated rigorous campaign against the Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Austin noted Harris’ preparedness and valuable input in these processes, highlighting her importance alongside President Biden.

Harris’ Role in Foreign Policy and National Security

Harris is recognized for her firm stance on Israel policy, consistently participating in meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and advocating for attention to Palestinian civilian casualties. She is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu later on Thursday. Harris has frequently represented the administration in international engagements, particularly in Asia and Latin America, stepping in for Biden when he was unable to attend.

In Central America, Harris was tasked with addressing the root causes of migration, a challenging assignment that has faced significant political hurdles. She has also been Biden’s representative at the Munich Security Conference, where in February 2022, she informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of the impending invasion of his country, based on intelligence reports.

International Engagements

Harris’ international experience includes attending the funeral of assassinated Japanese leader Shinzo Abe and the ASEAN summit of Southeast Asian leaders. She has also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, gaining a comprehensive understanding of national security and international affairs. Austin described her as a vital asset to the administration’s overall team.

Polling and Political Impact

Following Biden’s decision to step down from the reelection race and endorse Harris, a Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated that Harris has opened a marginal two-percentage-point lead over Trump. This development marks a significant shift in the political landscape as Harris prepares for a challenging campaign ahead.
