During the G7 summit in Italy, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz conveyed his unwavering confidence in U.S. President Joe Biden’s leadership, amid global challenges and concerns about Biden’s mental acuity.

In an interview with Axel Springer media outlets, Scholz emphasized Biden’s clarity and experience, particularly in international politics, as critical assets during these tumultuous times. “I think that Joe Biden is someone who is very clear, who knows exactly what he is doing and who is one of the most experienced politicians in the world,” Scholz stated. He praised Biden’s role at the summit, highlighting the importance of his leadership amidst ongoing global conflicts, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the crisis in Gaza.

Scholz on Biden’s Leadership

Scholz’s comments come at a crucial moment, with the U.S. and its allies facing significant geopolitical challenges. Scholz lauded Biden’s presence and strategic acumen in navigating complex issues. “In a difficult situation like this, where a war is taking place right here in Europe… this is an asset, a good thing, and therefore I can only say that this is a man who knows exactly what he is doing,” Scholz remarked.

EU Sanctions and Political Shifts

Addressing concerns about Germany allegedly blocking the EU’s sanctions against Russia, Scholz assured that the package is under discussion, not blocked. The conversation on sanctions takes place against the backdrop of recent EU elections showing a shift towards far-right politics, raising concerns about the continued international support for Ukraine.

U.S. Election and International Implications

The upcoming U.S. presidential election loomed large over the G7 discussions, with Biden facing domestic challenges such as inflation and immigration. Former President Donald Trump’s potential return has stirred debates about the U.S.’s international commitments, including NATO. Trump has previously threatened to withdraw from NATO if other members do not meet financial obligations.

However, Scholz dismissed speculations about Trump’s potential impact, expressing confidence in Biden’s chances. “I think it is very likely that the current president could win the election,” Scholz said, finding the intense speculation over the U.S. election outcome “a bit strange.”

Confidence in Biden’s Achievements

Highlighting Biden’s achievements, Scholz pointed to the positive economic developments and efforts towards national and global security during Biden’s presidency. “He has pursued a policy that has led to proper economic development… peace and security are in good hands… the U.S. is actually playing its role in the world,” Scholz noted. He also praised Biden’s commitment to fostering unity within the United States.
