California Governor Takes Swipe at Florida Counterpart

In a conversation with “Late Night” host Seth Meyers, California Governor Gavin Newsom did not hold back in criticizing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, stopping just short of accusing him of racist policies. Newsom characterized DeSantis’ conservative approach as “not anti-woke” but, in reality, “anti-Black.” The comments reflect the ongoing political sparring between the two governors, with Newsom taking advantage of the platform to criticize DeSantis on various fronts.

Background and Previous Face-Off

This recent exchange follows a face-off between Newsom and DeSantis moderated by Fox News’ Sean Hannity. The debate, intended to be a fair discussion between the governors, turned into a two-on-one situation, with Newsom facing challenges from both Hannity and DeSantis. Newsom, a prominent figure in President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign and a potential 2028 White House contender, sought to emphasize his blue state credentials but faced difficulties in the combative debate.

Newsom’s Accusations and Presidential Speculations

During the interview with Meyers, Newsom accused DeSantis of censoring facts, rewriting history, and targeting marginalized groups. While refuting claims of a 2024 presidential bid, Newsom took a swipe at DeSantis’ apparent presidential aspirations. He criticized DeSantis for scapegoating vulnerable communities, attacking minorities, and assaulting women.

Democratic Strategy and Culture War Issues

Newsom expressed his frustration with Democrats for not countering Republican narratives effectively, especially on culture war issues. He emphasized the importance of Democrats taking an offensive stance on topics like gun control and pushing back against policies affecting transgender students and drag shows. Newsom urged the party to overcome anxieties and doubts, asserting that they are on the right side of these issues.

Addressing California’s Challenges

In response to Meyers’ questions about California’s challenges, including homelessness and a high-speed rail project, Newsom attributed criticism to a “doom loop” that emerged since Nancy Pelosi became speaker. He defended his decisions and emphasized the need for Democrats to proactively address issues rather than being defensive.
