Representative Matt Gaetz from Florida is urging Congress to launch an investigation into Judge Tanya Chutkan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He alleges that she has shown bias and partisanship in handling cases related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Chutkan is overseeing the case against former President Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.
Gaetz plans to introduce a resolution in the House to censure Judge Chutkan and direct the House Judiciary Committee to examine her conduct. Gaetz claims that Chutkan’s sentencing of individuals linked to the January 6th events was excessively harsh compared to her handling of cases related to the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. He contends that her stance displays a lack of impartiality and respect for the role of a judge.
One specific incident Gaetz’s resolution points to is a sentencing hearing in October 2021, during which Chutkan disagreed with comparing the Capitol riot to the protests following George Floyd’s death. Gaetz quoted Chutkan as saying that equating the two events is a false equivalency and neglects the threat the January 6 riot posed to democracy’s foundation.
Gaetz also highlighted the case of Matthew Mazzocco, who he says received a 45-day jail sentence for spending 12 minutes on Capitol grounds during the January 6 incident. Gaetz argues that Mazzocco, who encouraged peaceful behavior, was a nonviolent offender.
Critics, including Trump and his allies, have accused Judge Chutkan of exhibiting political bias in her rulings. The tensions around the case have escalated, with reports of a Texas woman’s recent arrest for threatening to harm Chutkan if Trump is not reelected in 2024.
