Forty countries have condemned recent Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies. They call for an investigation into the incidents and urge for the safety of peacekeeping personnel in the volatile region.

International Outrage Over Israeli Attacks on UN Peacekeepers
A group of 40 countries has strongly condemned Israeli attacks on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. The peacekeepers, part of the UNIFIL mission, have faced escalating violence amid Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah. At least five UNIFIL members have been wounded in recent days, sparking international calls for an investigation into these incidents.
Call for Immediate Action and Investigation
The statement, issued by the nations contributing to the UN peacekeeping mission, emphasized the critical role of UNIFIL in maintaining peace in the region and called for an immediate cessation of attacks. The countries urged all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of peacekeepers, stressing that their work is vital for regional stability.
Previous Criticisms by European Nations and U.S. Involvement
European countries, including Spain, France, and Italy, have condemned the attacks as “unjustifiable.” On Friday, U.S. President Joe Biden joined the chorus, urging Israel to stop targeting the UN peacekeepers. The attacks on UNIFIL facilities have prompted concern worldwide, with Israeli forces allegedly deliberately firing at the mission’s headquarters in Naqoura.
UNIFIL’s Role Amid Rising Tensions
UNIFIL was established in 1978 to oversee Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon and has since played a crucial role in monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. As of now, the force comprises over 10,000 troops from 50 countries. Despite the growing risks, UNIFIL has decided to remain in the region, with its spokesperson stating that the mission’s withdrawal from certain positions, as requested by Israel, is not an option.
Escalating Conflict in the Region
The violence comes as Israel continues its military campaign against Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the UN peacekeepers to leave southern Lebanon, claiming that their presence makes them vulnerable to Hezbollah. However, UNIFIL has stood firm, refusing to abandon its posts despite increased attacks, including an incident where Israeli tanks entered and damaged a UNIFIL base.
