Susan Wojcicki, the former CEO of YouTube and a pivotal figure in Google’s early days, has passed away at the age of 56. Her husband, Dennis Troper, shared the heartbreaking news late Friday, revealing that Wojcicki had been battling non-small cell lung cancer for two years.

“My beloved wife of 26 years and mother to our five children left us today after 2 years of living with non-small cell lung cancer,” Troper wrote in a poignant social media post. He described Wojcicki as “not just my best friend and partner in life, but a brilliant mind, a loving mother, and a dear friend to many.”

A Legacy at Google and YouTube

Wojcicki’s contributions to the tech world are monumental. As an early employee at Google, she was instrumental in shaping the company’s direction, beginning with her decision to rent the garage of her Menlo Park, California, home to Google’s co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, in 1998. This humble beginning was a crucial step in the growth of what would become one of the world’s most influential companies.

Wojcicki’s career at Google spanned nearly 25 years, culminating in her role as the CEO of YouTube. During her nine-year tenure at the video-sharing giant, she oversaw the platform’s evolution into a cultural powerhouse that reshaped the entertainment industry, political discourse, and global communication. She stepped down as CEO in 2023 to focus on her health and family.

A Year of Profound Loss

Wojcicki’s death comes just months after the family endured another tragedy. In February, the couple’s 19-year-old son, Marco Troper, passed away at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a freshman. The loss of both Susan and Marco within such a short span has undoubtedly left a deep void in the lives of their family and friends.

A Lasting Impact

Susan Wojcicki’s influence on the tech industry and her legacy as a leader at Google and YouTube will be remembered for years to come. Her work not only helped to shape the internet as we know it but also inspired countless others in the tech community.
