Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister on Challenges to Peace in Russia-Ukraine War

The Russia-Ukraine war continues to escalate, with no immediate end in sight despite hopes for diplomacy under the incoming U.S. administration. Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba underscores that the resolution lies in Moscow’s hands, not Kyiv’s, as Ukraine remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty.

“With utmost respect, we should not start the conversation with what Ukraine is ready to accept. We should put full responsibility on the side that launched this war,” Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said. | Evgeniy Maloletka/AP

Ukraine Doubts Quick End to War Under Trump

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed skepticism about a swift resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war once U.S. President-elect Donald Trump assumes office. Speaking on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” Kuleba dismissed the notion of a rapid peace deal, contrary to Trump’s campaign claims of ending the war immediately.

Key Factors Preventing a Rapid Resolution

Kuleba identified three key reasons why a quick end to the war remains unlikely:

  1. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not yield under pressure.
  2. Ukraine refuses to accept rushed or coercive peace terms.
  3. The ultimate key to peace lies with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who initiated the conflict.

Ukraine Shifts Focus to Russian Responsibility

When asked about potential U.S. pressure to cede territory occupied by Russian forces, Kuleba stressed the need to shift focus onto Russia’s role in the war. He reiterated that Ukraine’s priority is holding Moscow accountable for its aggression rather than compromising its territorial integrity.

Intensifying Conflict Raises Concerns

Recent developments highlight the war’s intensifying nature. North Korean soldiers have reportedly joined Russian forces in combat. Additionally, U.S. President Joe Biden approved the use of long-range American missiles targeting Russian territory, while Putin confirmed the deployment of advanced ballistic missiles against Ukraine. Kuleba acknowledged growing nervousness among Ukrainians due to these escalations and the threat of further missile strikes.

Acknowledging Ukraine’s Resilience

Despite fears, Kuleba emphasized Ukraine’s resilience in the face of escalating threats. He reaffirmed that the country remains committed to defending its sovereignty and called for the international community to focus on Russia’s accountability in pursuing peace.
