Title: Former Governor Chris Christie Attributes Surge in Antisemitism to Trump’s Leadership

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has once again pointed to former President Donald Trump as a major contributor to the alarming rise in antisemitism across the United States. In a recent interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Christie emphasized that Trump’s “intolerant language and conduct” serves as a catalyst, granting permission for individuals to express similar intolerances.

Christie, currently a Republican presidential hopeful, previously voiced his concerns during a trip to Israel in an interview with the New York Times earlier this month. He contends that Trump’s influence has played a role in the surge of bigotry against Jews, already on the rise before the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas.

The former governor argues that leaders, including university professors and presidents, share responsibility for the escalating antisemitism. He accuses them of being “unwilling to stand up to antisemitism on their campuses.” Christie goes further by urging governors in states where Jewish students face threats on college campuses to deploy state police forces to ensure their protection.

Christie’s assessment acknowledges a broader societal impact, suggesting that Trump’s behavior has contributed to an environment where intolerance towards any group is increasingly normalized, leading to a disturbing uptick in antisemitic and anti-Muslim incidents. The Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas appears to have further fueled these incidents.

It’s important to note that Christie does not solely place blame on Trump, acknowledging that other contributors have played a role in the troubling trend. However, he specifically singles out Trump’s “intolerant language and conduct” as a factor that provides a semblance of legitimacy for others to act similarly.

As the political landscape evolves, this statement by a prominent Republican figure adds a layer of complexity to discussions surrounding the root causes of antisemitism and raises questions about the role of leadership in shaping societal attitudes.
