A former Democratic National Committee (DNC) vice chair has taken a bold stance, urging leading Democrats to pressure President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. R.T. Rybak, former mayor of Minneapolis, expressed his concerns on Facebook, emphasizing the potential historical consequences if Biden continues his campaign.
Rybak’s Urgent Call to Action
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Rybak highlighted the silence of elected officials who privately acknowledge the need for Biden to step down. He wrote, “Our elected officials are staying shockingly silent in public, especially considering how many of them acknowledge privately that this has to happen.” Rybak warned that failure to act could result in severe repercussions, stating, “They fear political retribution but they should really fear that if we lose this election because they didn’t have the guts to do what they know needs to be done, holy hell and history will come down on them like an anvil.”
Reacting to Biden’s Debate Performance
Rybak’s call for action follows Biden’s much-criticized debate performance on Thursday. He challenged the notion that no other Democrat could defeat former President Donald Trump, listing potential candidates such as Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Rybak dismissed fears of chaos resulting from a Biden withdrawal, proposing a clear process for selecting a new candidate. “It is absolutely not too late to pick a new candidate,” Rybak wrote. “Hold two forums for candidates who meet a threshold, do a straw poll, and the delegates pick. A convention that right now almost no one would turn on, would turn into ‘must see TV’ with Democrats trying to top each other on making the most compelling case.”
Praise for Biden’s Accomplishments
While calling for Biden’s withdrawal, Rybak did not dismiss the President’s achievements. He acknowledged Biden’s contributions, stating, “Biden deserves tremendous praise for his time as president.” However, Rybak emphasized the importance of focusing on the future rather than past accomplishments, arguing that gratitude should not overshadow the need to win the 2024 election over Trump.
Elections and the Future
Rybak concluded his post with a powerful reminder that elections are about the future. He criticized the current messaging from the Democratic Party and stressed the urgency of changing the messenger. “Elections are about the future and Democrats have an inspirational message that is not being told while a convicted felon who tried to steal the election and end our democracy looks like he could win. Not a single thing about that will change unless we — all of us — demand we change our messenger.”
