A former Republican candidate, William Braddock, has been charged with threatening to kill Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna during the 2022 primary race. Threats Against Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna

In a shocking development, federal authorities have charged former Republican congressional candidate William Braddock with threatening to kill his opponent, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, during the 2022 primary. The threat, which involved hiring a hit squad, was made in a recorded phone call to a conservative activist. Braddock’s remarks aimed to dissuade support for Luna, who was running for a seat in Florida’s Clearwater area.

Recorded Threat and Legal Proceedings

During the recorded call, Braddock suggested he had access to assassins and claimed he would send a Russian and Ukrainian hit squad to kill Luna if necessary. Despite these alarming comments, Braddock denied hearing the recording and implied that it may have been altered. Although local authorities initially declined to press charges due to lack of direct threats to Luna or her family, federal authorities have now taken action, charging Braddock with interstate transmission of a true threat.

FBI Investigation and Braddock’s Arrest

The FBI, along with the St. Petersburg Police Department, investigated the case, leading to Braddock’s extradition from the Philippines. After the 2022 primary, he moved overseas but was arrested there last year in conjunction with the FBI. Braddock faces up to five years in prison for the charge, which comes as part of the Department of Justice’s election threats task force efforts.

Luna’s Political Career and Response

Anna Paulina Luna, who had previously lost to Charlie Crist in 2020, ultimately won the 2022 GOP primary and secured her seat in Congress. She is currently running for reelection in a district affected by Hurricane Helene. Luna’s office has not yet commented on the case, but she continues to enjoy support from prominent Republicans, including former President Donald Trump.

Political Implications

The case highlights the contentious nature of modern political campaigns, especially in Florida, where political rivalries can escalate into legal battles. With Luna’s reelection campaign underway, this case may influence voters in the region as well as shine a light on broader election security concerns.
