TALLAHASSEE, Florida — The Florida Legislature’s 60-day session has kicked off with heightened political tensions among Republicans, speculation over Gov. Ron DeSantis’ legacy, and concerns over reduced federal funding. This year’s session is expected to be shaped by a power struggle between lawmakers and the governor, along with early moves in the 2026 election race.

GOP Infighting and DeSantis’ Political Future

While past sessions were marked by DeSantis’ strong influence, Republican lawmakers are now asserting more independence. Signs of this shift include potential budget veto overrides, resistance to some of DeSantis’ controversial appointments, and even a proposed amendment to eliminate the lieutenant governor position while limiting gubernatorial power over state agencies.

At the same time, DeSantis’ future remains a hot topic. With his term ending in 2026, Rep. Byron Donalds has secured Donald Trump’s endorsement to replace him. However, Florida’s First Lady, Casey DeSantis, may enter the race, creating a possible high-stakes GOP primary.

Legislative Priorities: Budget Constraints and Policy Shifts

DeSantis has proposed a $115.6 billion state budget, including tax cuts and pay raises for law enforcement. However, legislative leaders are focused on financial restraint, with House Speaker Daniel Perez questioning recent spending increases.

Key issues on the table include:

  • Property tax relief: DeSantis supports lowering local property taxes, but major cuts could require budget reductions or new revenue sources.
  • Immigration policy: Florida Republicans recently passed a strict immigration bill, but debates on enforcement measures continue.
  • Gun rights: Lawmakers are considering open carry legislation, which DeSantis has signaled support for.
  • Ballot measure restrictions: There’s a push to limit outside groups’ ability to place constitutional amendments on Florida ballots.

GOP Lawmakers Challenge DeSantis’ Agenda

Despite DeSantis’ strong policy agenda, some Republicans are charting their own course. Senate President Ben Albritton emphasized that the Legislature is a co-equal branch of government, signaling potential resistance to DeSantis-backed policies.

Meanwhile, Democrats remain on the sidelines, watching how the internal GOP divisions play out. State House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell stated, “I’m here for the Legislature pushing back on executive authority,” but acknowledged that GOP lawmakers still largely align with DeSantis’ values.

As the session unfolds, Republican lawmakers will have to balance loyalty to DeSantis with their own political ambitions—especially with the 2026 election looming.
