WASHINGTON, D.C.Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, made his largest-known political donation in August, contributing $289,100 to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). This substantial donation is part of Musk’s increasing political involvement as Republicans fight to maintain their fragile House majority in the 2024 elections.

The donation was linked to a joint fundraising committee with Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) and primarily earmarked for the NRCC’s convention and headquarters accounts. Although Musk has donated to both Democrats and Republicans in the past, this contribution represents a significant increase in his support for the GOP.

Musk’s Growing Role in Politics

Musk, who has an estimated net worth of over $250 billion, has stepped up his political activities in recent months, particularly in support of former President Donald Trump. Through America PAC, a pro-Trump organization, Musk is playing a key role in boosting Trump’s re-election campaign. The PAC has started spending in competitive House races across the country, further signaling Musk’s influence in the upcoming election.

While the NRCC received nearly $300,000 from Musk, it’s expected that he has contributed even more to America PAC, which is able to accept unlimited amounts from individual donors. The full extent of his donations will be revealed when the PAC files its financial report on Oct. 15.

Political Strategy and Hiring

To manage his growing political involvement, Musk has brought on longtime Republican strategist Chris Young as his political gatekeeper. Young’s hiring signals Musk’s intention to remain active in U.S. politics, particularly as Republicans look to hold onto vulnerable House seats in swing districts.

Despite Musk’s significant contribution, the NRCC’s August fundraising total of $9.7 million lagged behind the $22.2 million raised by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).
