In a shocking turn of events, the Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was tragically shot dead as he left a campaign event in Quito, sending shockwaves throughout the nation. The incident occurred just days before a pivotal election in which the rising violence and crime rates have taken center stage as major concerns.

A Nation in Mourning
Videos circulating on social media have captured the heart-wrenching scene. Villavicencio, a former journalist known for his collaboration with international media outlets like The Guardian, was surrounded by supporters and guards, heading towards a waiting vehicle. Suddenly, gunshots shattered the air, causing panic and chaos as people scrambled for cover

President’s Pledge and National Emergency
Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso addressed the nation in a televised statement made after midnight. He confirmed that the elections would continue as planned, albeit under a two-month state of emergency. Lasso revealed that soldiers would be deployed to guard polling stations during the upcoming elections. Despite the tragedy, he emphasized the importance of upholding democracy even in the face of adversity.

Flanked by cabinet members and electoral authorities, Lasso stated, “We agree in the face of the loss of a patriot and a fighter, elections should not be suspended; on the contrary, they should be held and democracy should be strengthened.” He announced three days of national mourning in honor of Villavicencio.

Rising Violence and Criminal Gangs
The assassination of Villavicencio has brought into sharp focus the alarming surge in violent crime that Ecuador has been grappling with. The country has witnessed prison massacres and a more than twofold increase in murder rates between 2020 and 2022. President Lasso’s response was firm: “Organized crime has gone too far, but they will feel the full weight of the law.”

A Bold Campaigner and Critical Voice
Villavicencio, hailing from the Andean province of Chimborazo, was a candidate for the Build Ecuador Movement and one of the most critical voices against corruption, particularly during the presidency of Rafael Correa from 2007 to 2017. He was a former union member at the state oil company Petroecuador and later became a journalist, uncovering alleged millions in oil contract losses. His courage and unflinching dedication to battling corruption earned him both praise and threats.
