President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Dr. Marty Makary, a Johns Hopkins surgeon and prominent critic of federal health policies during the pandemic, to head the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The announcement signals a bold direction for the agency tasked with regulating the nation’s food and drug safety.

Makary’s Vision for the FDA

Trump described Makary as the right candidate to restore public trust in the FDA. In a statement on Friday, Trump declared that the agency had “lost the trust of Americans” and emphasized that Makary would “course-correct” its policies.

Makary will work under Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s controversial pick for the Department of Health and Human Services, focusing on pressing issues like harmful chemicals in the food supply and addressing the “Childhood Chronic Disease Epidemic.”

Makary rose to prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic, where he criticized delays in vaccine approvals and advocated for more nuanced vaccine recommendations, particularly for children and young males at risk of rare side effects like myocarditis. He also challenged federal health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, earning him favor among conservative critics of the public health establishment.

Praise and Skepticism

Supporters, including Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), praised Makary’s academic credentials and advocacy for patient freedom. “Great guy, impeccable credentials,” Paul remarked. Makary’s ability to balance his pro-vaccine stance with calls for targeted vaccine policies has made him a polarizing figure.

However, his selection is not without controversy. Some critics worry his outspoken views could lead to “upheaval” within the FDA’s programs, particularly in food safety. Chris Meekins, a former HHS official, noted Makary’s appointment is more favorable than other floated names but still lacks the industry-wide acceptance of Trump’s former FDA commissioner, Dr. Scott Gottlieb.

A Track Record of Challenging Medical Norms

Makary’s latest book, published in September, explores instances where modern medicine got critical issues wrong, such as the opioid crisis and misguided dietary guidelines. He also defended Kennedy on “Fox News Sunday”, emphasizing Kennedy’s recent statements clarifying he is not anti-vaccine.

Makary has donated to both Democratic and Republican campaigns, reflecting a bipartisan history that could complicate his path to Senate confirmation.

Looking Ahead

If confirmed, Makary will face significant challenges, including addressing public skepticism of the FDA, ensuring rigorous drug safety protocols, and navigating bipartisan scrutiny. His appointment is likely to shape the future of U.S. public health policy in a transformative way.
