WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has been tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the nation’s next attorney general. Bondi, a staunch Trump ally, replaces Rep. Matt Gaetz, who withdrew from consideration following Senate opposition.

Bondi’s Background

Bondi, who served as Florida’s first female attorney general from 2011 to 2019, brings extensive legal and political experience to the role. During her tenure, she spearheaded litigation against opioid manufacturers, resulting in settlements after she left office.

Her ties to Trump run deep. Bondi worked on Trump’s transition team after his 2016 victory and served as a senior adviser during his first impeachment fight. She was also involved in defending Trump publicly during the Senate trial, where he was acquitted of abuse of power charges.

In addition to her political experience, Bondi is a partner at Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with strong connections to the Trump network, and co-chair of the America First Policy Institute’s law and justice division.

A Controversial Past

Bondi’s career has not been without controversy. In 2016, it was revealed that Trump’s foundation improperly donated $25,000 to Bondi’s political committee in 2013, around the same time her office declined to pursue a fraud investigation into Trump University. Trump later settled complaints against the defunct business for $25 million. Bondi has maintained that the donation had no bearing on the case, and Trump has praised her loyalty.

Additionally, Bondi was involved in a publicized legal battle over custody of a dog she adopted after Hurricane Katrina, which ended in a settlement.

Easier Confirmation Path Ahead

Bondi’s nomination is expected to face less resistance than Gaetz’s, whose potential appointment was derailed by allegations of misconduct. Republican lawmakers have expressed optimism about Bondi’s confirmation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called her a “smart, tough, and tested leader” who would restore confidence in the Department of Justice. However, some Democrats, including Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), criticized the pick, citing concerns about her ties to Trump and past controversies.

Key Priorities as Attorney General

Bondi’s tenure as attorney general will likely focus on supporting Trump’s key priorities:

  • Reforming the DOJ to reflect Trump’s vision of law and order.
  • Investigating alleged government overreach during the Biden administration.
  • Tackling drug-related crimes, drawing on her experience litigating against opioid manufacturers.
  • Strengthening election integrity efforts, a central theme of Trump’s campaign.

Bondi’s Connection to Trump’s Inner Circle

Bondi has cultivated close ties with members of Trump’s family and key allies, including Lara Trump, who chairs the Republican National Committee. Bondi has even advocated for Lara Trump as a potential replacement for Sen. Marco Rubio, who was recently named secretary of state.

With her nomination, Trump solidifies his administration’s reliance on loyalists who share his vision for reshaping federal institutions.
