With only 100 days left until the 2024 election, the Democratic Party is experiencing a renewed sense of optimism following Vice President Kamala Harris’s ascent to the top of the ticket. After President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, Democrats have been buoyed by a fresh wave of enthusiasm and support for Harris, who now leads the party’s charge against former President Donald Trump.
The shift in sentiment marks a significant turnaround for Democrats, who had been grappling with concerns over Biden’s candidacy and its potential impact on down-ballot races. The withdrawal of Biden has sparked a newfound energy within the party, as highlighted by increased fundraising and volunteer engagement. Harris’s campaign has raised $200 million since her nomination, with two-thirds of donations coming from first-time contributors. Additionally, over 170,000 individuals have signed up to volunteer, reflecting a growing grassroots movement.
Despite Harris not being the frontrunner, her candidacy has energized the Democratic base. A recent Wall Street Journal poll indicates that 81% of Harris’s supporters are enthusiastic about her campaign, a stark contrast to the 37% enthusiasm rating for Biden’s supporters earlier this month. This surge in support is evident in key battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where local Democratic leaders are capitalizing on the momentum to bolster down-ballot races.
Prominent figures within the Democratic Party have expressed their support for Harris, praising her dynamic campaign style and the excitement she has generated. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, both potential vice-presidential candidates, lauded Harris’s ability to energize voters across the nation.
The Harris campaign’s newfound energy was on full display at a major fundraiser in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which featured performances by James Taylor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Emanuel Ax. The event drew 800 attendees and raised over $1.4 million, far surpassing initial expectations.
As the election draws nearer, Democrats are optimistic about their chances, buoyed by Harris’s strong campaign and the party’s unified effort to counter the Republican agenda led by Trump and his running mate, JD Vance.
